Weingut Lanius Knab

“I cook with wine, sometimes. I even add it to the food.”

The hubby and I vacationed in Germany this past summer. The Rhine Valley was one of the areas we stopped at. So beautiful! The Rhine Valley is a picturesque region known for its stunning landscapes, historic castles, and vineyards. We stopped at this particular winery because our travel agent highly recommended it, so we were scheduled for a wine tour! Weingut Lanius Knab Winery is located in Oberwesel, along the Rhine River.

First part was exploring and touring the winery. Our tour guide was Jorg Lanius (as well as the tasting, more on that later😁). He is not only one of the owners, but he is also an incredible guide. Very knowledgeable and passionate about his wines. He took us down to the cellar, and omg so much wine! He told us the process of how they are made. We learned a lot about their history, the story behind the wine, and the amazing Riesling region. What’s incredible is that most of the wines are very old (as you can tell by the pictures), but they are the most expensive and exquisite tasting wines.

Now for the wine tasting! The husband and I each had a flight of six wines to taste, with a mixture of red and white. The wines we tried were amazing. So delicate in flavor, and so much diversity of wine styles! Jorg worked with our palates to determine what he thought we should try and he was fantastic! In my flight, I loved the Riesling! (Germany is renowned for its high-quality white wines, particularly those made from the Riesling grape)

Of course with our wine we had some delicious food to pair with it! We ordered the Flammkuchen, composed of bread dough rolled out very thinly in the shape of a rectangle or oval, which is covered with fromage blanc or crème fraîche. The one we ordered had local smoked trout, apple, and spring onions. It was very tasty and all the ingredients meshed well together. We also ordered the Spundekäs, with pretzel and bread. This a traditional cheese spread from the Rhine region made with cream cheese, quark, and paprika. It was smooth and tangy, paired nicely with the bread and pretzel!

What a great experience! We learned a lot. The owner was super friendly and knowledgeable. The wines are very nice, each with its unique characteristics. (We bought some bottles and had them shipped to the U.S.A.) A fun and enjoyable experience in a nice calm setting. Definitely stop at this winery if you are in the area! Thanks for reading my review and continue to chomp away!
